Gas Prices Affect School Buses
>> Wednesday, July 9, 2008
Even schools have to figure out how to deal and manage with today's gas prices. Some schools are cutting out bus transportation for extra-curricular activities on weekends. Some have switched to four days a week (boy, what kid doesn't love that one). Others have changed their distance guidelines for walkers and riders so more kids are walking.
So what's the problem? The problem is this increases the risk to children that they may or may not get to and from school safely if they aren't on the bus. It also affects attendance - kids deciding not to go to school instead of arranging transportation and how many kids will participate in school activities without bus transportation.
I know our school taxes each year are higher than any other we have ever paid anywhere. We can't afford to have those raised to pay for the increase in fuel charges for schools. If it came down to it, my schedule can be arranged to provide transportation for our kids so that's ok. A lot of families would have a difficult time doing that though with work schedules.
Have you heard of any changes being made at your child's school due to the rise in gas?
