Self-Defense for Women

>> Thursday, January 29, 2009

I think we all know of people who have been assaulted in some form. This is especially scary to women who can be more easily subdued due to the differences in muscle strength between the sexes though I do know of men who are also abused and don't speak out due to the stigma. I was in an abusive situation at one point and removed myself from it. I've been alone out in the public and felt uncomfortable or scared. I've been in my home and felt scared, perhaps hearing a noise or just an overactive imagination running wild, especially since having children and the responsibility on my shoulders to keep them safe. I have protection on each floor of my home that are safe enough to have around children (this is SO important and you must keep this in mind) but can cause serious harm to an intruder.

I used to carry mace around with me at all times. I should still do that because you just never know. My protection I have now stays home so I should have something to legally carry as well. I live in what is viewed as a safe area but no area is 100% safe. The county jails wouldn't be full if that were so!

If you are interested in finding self defense products for yourself, your sister, mother, aunt, daughter, girlfriend, etc., here are products out there that can help put more confidence in your step. As we've all been told, walking confidently and not submissively is one deterrent to a criminal targeting you. They look for a weaker target. Don't be that weaker target. Learn how to handle whatever product you choose for self-defense safely and ensure its legality so you don't find yourself in trouble yourself!

Seriously Morbid Sense of Humor

>> Tuesday, January 27, 2009

I must have a sick sense of humor because I found this graphic funny! It might come in handy for the stepmoms who love their husbands but are stressing over the "step" part of their marriage right now. Cupid has to have a sick sense of humor just like me!

Breastfeeding vs. Facebook

>> Monday, January 26, 2009

**cross-posting**

Apparently this has been news for a month but I'm just now seeing it on CNN today. Facebook is removing pictures, or banning individuals, for posting breastfeeding pictures. They showed one comment on the news from a woman comparing breastfeeding pictures to sexual pictures. Lady, take the stick out of your backside so you're not so uptight! There is a huge difference between feeding your infant and sex. If you don't realize that, perhaps you should look into improving your sex life!

I have nursing pictures; I had them professionally done. I don't have them on my PRIVATE Facebook but I don't think there would be anything wrong with it if I did (private as in only friends and family have access). My pictures were tastefully done and didn't show anything more than a mother nursing her infant. I think if the pictures are in good taste and modest (we aren't exposing both breasts for the hell of it since baby can only use one...unless you're feeding twins), then what is the problem? Send some of the more uptight individuals to a beach outside Toronto and see their eyeballs pop out of their head with the topless beaches or the bathing suit "floss" that some people call bathing suits. A nursing mother is feeding her child!

If there are individuals who are posting inappropriate pictures, then they should be removed. However, breastfeeding is beautiful and appropriate, modest pictures shouldn't be removed or individuals banned for them.

The United States, for all their freedoms, sure has a lot of constipated people! I am an American so I can say that! :)

As an aside...but similar topic...I never understood why men could walk around shirtless but women couldn't here. Are we that uptight or are our hot-blooded males that unable to control their urges if a breast is flashed? So, which is it?

Playstation 3

How many lucky kids ("kids" includes children and most male men) found a playstation 3 under the Christmas tree this year? We have a PS2 that is on its last leg right now...the kids wore it down. Two of my children each received a PSP from us this year and they love them.

The Playstation electronics are well liked in our family. The rules for use aren't (can't use during the school week, use only on weekends after chores are done and only if homework is done, yada yada yada) but that's the way it goes. Kids don't have to like them; they just have to follow them.

If you are considering a new video game system, check out the PS3.

Grandma Forgets Birthday Again

>> Thursday, January 22, 2009

Well, it happened a few times before, and it happened again. I believe my mother forgot my daughter's 12th birthday. I wrote the entire family's birthdays down for her and she still forgot? Two weeks before my daughter's birthday, my kids were calling their grandmother to wish her a happy birthday.

I didn't ask my daughter because I didn't want to bring it to her attention and hurt her feelings if she hadn't realized it but I know my mother didn't call the house phone or my cell to talk to her. I checked both my daughter and son's cell phones and no calls or texts from my mother anywhere around the time of her birthday. I check the mail and no card received last week (or this week...I even gave it time in case it was just late). I'm pretty damn sure that she doesn't forget some of the other grandchildren's birthdays! Play favorites much?

I'm not surprised.

Barack Obama Got a Do-Over

>> Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Barack Obama got a "do over" on the Oath of Office. Because of the stumbling yesterday when it was taken, he took it again. They're showing it on CNN right now.

I guess because of the stumbling and such, they wanted to make sure there was no question that the Oath was done correctly. They're saying it was done legally but because of some "controversy out there" (I haven't heard any of that), they wanted to redo it.

OK.

Stressed Out Stepmom

>> Thursday, January 15, 2009

My TMJ is acting up. (Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or TMJ joint disorders are related to the jaw joint...connects the lower jaw to the skull in front of the ear.) Most people get it from grinding their teeth at night or injury. I get mine from clenching constantly when I am stressed. Marrying a non-custodial father with a less than pleasant ex will do that to a person.

I have been able to manage my TMJ much better the last couple years and only have flare-ups when things come up with the stepkids and the ex. It's acting up now.

The ex called two days ago to see if we had copies of their son's ADHD diagnosis because she couldn't find hers (she's been a legal secretary for about 20 years and apparently she can't file correctly...go figure). I went into our files to get our paperwork to give her a copy and was reading through all the logs and doctor evaluations from all the behaviors that prompted the ADHD and ODD diagnosis - the anger and aggression towards my kids, doctor's reports, etc. It made me tense to remember all this crap and how many years it took us to get somebody to pay attention to my stepson and what my kids went through and lo and behold...my jaw has been aching again.

Stress can take a toll on your body whether it be in the form of autoimmune disorders, TMJ, insomnia, or something else. Everybody has their limits on how much stress they, and their bodies, can handle. My limits stop at the ex apparently.

What is Mesothelioma?

There are commercials all over the television for mesothelioma. I had no idea what this was so I looked it up.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos (it is not caused by smoking but your risks for getting mesothelioma increase if you are a smoker). It develops in the mesothelium in your body. I didn't know my body had mesothelium so I looked that up too. Mesothelium is a lining that covers most of your internal organs (lungs, heart, abdominal cavity, etc.).

Now I know what it is. Our last house had asbestos shingles that gave off a dust down the side of the house until we had it painted. It's why I never wanted to plant a vegetable garden. I was afraid the asbestos was in the soil. I hope painting it to stop the dusting was enough.

FANTASTIC Cheese Dip Recipe

>> Wednesday, January 14, 2009

My sister made this and brought it for New Year's and it was SOOOOO good. We spread it on little slices of bread (hmmm...will have to find out what kind of bread it was from my sister...it was really good) but you could use crackers or whatever you wanted too.

Thought I'd share the recipe with everybody:

Cheese Dip/Spread

(2) 8 oz. Cream Cheese
1 cup Mayonnaise
12 oz. Shredded Swiss Cheese
4-5 Green onions chopped
Hormel Real Bacon pieces

Combine all ingredients except bacon bits. When well blended, put in 10" pie pan and sprinkle bacon bits on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

My sister splits the recipe into two smaller dishes, and freezes one for a later time. All you have to do then is thaw and bake.

This is great to have in the freezer for unexpected guests who stop by.
