Kids are gone...marriage damage?

>> Wednesday, July 6, 2011

The kids have come and gone.  I question the future of my marriage - will it make it through until our own kids become adults?  Will I want to remain married after they're grown?  Right now, I'm too livid to know the answer to that.  It's not even the kids.  They're being kids who just do what they're allowed to get away with!  I'm thoroughly disgusted with my husband's parenting after this.  He became somebody totally different and I can't say I liked this new him much.

What bugged me?  Disneyland Dad Syndrome?  Yeah, that's about it. Here are a few things that happened...who could know that so much crap could happen in so little time.

He put on a DVD that his daughter had said was really good (it was a scary flick, rated R) and allowed ALL the kids - his and ours - to watch it (down to the six-year-old).  We NEVER allow our young kids to watch these types of movies.  We even watch PG-13 movies FIRST before allowing any of the kids, including our 12-year-old and 14-year-old, to watch them.  When we want to watch PG-13 or R rated movies, we send them from the room or watch them after they go to bed.  Hubby being "cool dad" allowed all six kids to watch while I was editing computer videos and I was left with the fallout with my scared kids.  My ten-year-old scared, my six-year-old crying her eyes out.  My oldest two were ok, but the youngest two - grrrr!!  Then my husband comes into the bedroom wondering what is going on when he finds our two youngest scared and crying in our bed.  Really?  Are ya dense?

Then the swearing!  After all the issues that we have had to deal with on my stepson's vulgar mouth on facebook where his siblings can see it (I contacted the ex about it), my husband was swearing it up being "cool".  Parents swear sometimes.  It happens. I do it when I slam a finger in a drawer, etc.  He did it repeatedly to be funny.  His kids found him hilarious.  I found it disgusting, insulting and irritating that he'd behave like that in front of our kids.  Not only did he sound stupid, his kids will now see ME as the sole person who had a problem with all my stepson's vulgarities on facebook because obviously, it's all ok with dad!  My stepdaughter did all the correcting with her brother, telling him to watch his mouth too.  Dad didn't do squat.

Dad built a bonfire in the backyard one night and was outside with some of the kids.  Fireworks started going off down the street from our house so he sent our oldest in to get his son to go watch them.  He didn't ask if I wanted to go with our youngest two who were inside with me.  They left.  We were excluded.  I found out yesterday he was joking about mooning me as they walked out of the driveway to go see those fireworks. Really?  Not only do we get excluded but do you now have the maturity level of your teenaged son?

I don't allow our kids to have energy drinks.  I think they're dangerous and send too many kids to the doctor and emergency room.  I've told my husband several times of stories I've heard of kids becoming ill from them.  He knows perfectly how I feel about them and it's not something we've ever bought for our kids.  We wouldn't. When he got back from picking up his kids last week, his son had a huge energy drink when he walked in our door.  Whatever, maybe his mother bought it for him so I let it pass.  She allows him to drink them daily.  Yesterday, on the way to spend the day in another city with all the kids, we stopped at a gas station.  He bought one lemonade for five kids to share and an energy drink for his son and handed it to him right in front of me.  Boy, if that didn't feel like a big "f you" right there.  Not only does his son get his own while the rest have to share, it's the drink I won't allow kids to have but sure, go ahead and drink it in front of them.  Later that day, my oldest was asking to drink one and why couldn't she drink them too.

My husband works 3rd shift.  I do 99% of the parenting, rule setting and discipline in our house.  This past weekend just made my 'almost single parent status because of his work schedule' harder. Thanks a lot.

Before going to see fireworks, we met a friend at McD's with her kids.  My stepdaughter bought my daughter a Frappe (we don't give our kids coffee - - don't want them getting into the caffeine habit and that is something they can decide to do when they're a little older) and then my daughter was wondering why she was buzzing and feeling sick at the fireworks.  I told her it was from the Frappe and hubby said no, it wasn't.  Yes, they have three times the caffeine than a can of pepsi and she's not used to it.  Like the food wasn't bad enough.  Nobody asked me if she could have it.  Hubby took that upon himself or his daughter did and he didn't bother contradicting her.  See, if I'd been sitting with him, maybe I would've had some input but he didn't leave me a seat to sit with them at McD's.  Excluded again.  Another big "f you"?  My daughter told me now she wants a Caramel Frappe every time.  Not happening.  Thanks a lot for the parenting help, dad!

Forward to the fireworks at a local festival.  We bought the two folding chairs we own and a couple blankets.  The chairs were for the adults and the blankets for all the kids.  I said that as I was getting things together.  We get there and get them set up and my stepson calls "dibs" on a chair and parks his behind in it.  I look at my husband who just looks at me back. Really?  You are not going to say anything? Another big "f you"? Well, back atcha.  My stepdaughter speaks up and tells her brother he can't call dibs on it.  I told my stepson that the chairs were for the adults and blankets for the kids and that I would be sitting there.  He just looked at me, I looked at hubby and hubby didn't say a word.  I left to look for a friend who was there with one of my kids, found her and returned to our area and stepson still had his butt parked.  I waited and nothing.  Finally, dad quietly said the chairs were for the women (the friend and me) and the rest would sit on the ground.  My stepson didn't budge from the chair.  I stood there and waited...and waited...and waited.  Our friend tried to pretend she wasn't seeing what she was seeing.  Finally, dad tells his son to sit on the blanket.  Gee, thanks.  Glad you finally got around to it.

My stepson also took MY expensive guitar off the wall to play it, knocking it on an amp that was on the stand while he was at it.  Nobody touches my guitars.  My husband wouldn't ever allow any of our kids to play my guitars (like I would never allow the kids to touch his guitars) without asking me first.  Not only did he see him take it down and knock it into an amp, he let him walk away with it into his bedroom.

I get that he doesn't see them often.  That's his own damn fault. He should've insisted instead of letting the ex and the kids dictate to him. There's a court order.  Use it.  Instead, he doesn't see them as often as they should be spending time together and instead of the same rules apply for all of our kids like they used to (within reason because obviously older gets get some additional privileges) when we saw them on a regular basis, he totally undermined our own rules for our kids and turned into Disneyland Dad.  He will go back on his 3rd shift schedule, working all night and sleeping all day, and I will be single parent mom to our own four kids and try to keep the boundaries and privileges we've always had for our own kids despite his total disregard for them, and me.

I don't know. There were just so many instances where he excluded, where he disregarded our normal everyday rules, where his behavior to be "cool" wasn't good for our own kids.  It felt like a slap in the face so many times.

I could handle an adjustment period, a few irritating things to overlook.  His cussing up a storm to be funny?  OK, he hasn't had his kids here in awhile and it'll take time to get the parenting groove back on instead of trying to be cool dad.  Problem is, cool white trash dad stuck around the entire time.  Cool dad's behavior made our own kids cry, disrespected me in front of them, snubbed me several times and a couple of our kids at times, and allowed some of our kids to do things they aren't allowed to do and now they want to know why I say they can't when dad let them and his own kids over the weekend.

At this point, I am glad they went back to their state and that has nothing to do with them.  If things kept building up, I'd have lost it.  My stepson did what he was allowed to get away with.  It has everything to do with how dad behaved.  He turned into white trash disney dad and he's lucky I didn't turn into white trash jerry springer mom and throw all his stuff out the front door screaming like a banshee.

I have never felt so excluded, disrespected, trivialized, disregarded as a parent (not to his kids but to our own after his destruction of our own household rules/expectations).  When he excluded me from sitting with them at dinner, it literally felt like a physical slap.  I flinched.  I shopped, I cooked, I cleaned, made appointments for things to do, set up beds/linens and made sure to have favorite meals for his kids while they were here, gave him my more dependable car to use to get his kids there and back, etc.  Next time, I am thinking we'll trade states. When his kids come into town to see dad, our kids and I will head to their state and see my family.  I don't see myself ever wanting to do this again with him. I can't even look at my husband right now.

We used to be united when his kids were with us.  We were a team.  We parented as a team.  Our marriage was important.  Before, he'd never intentionally hurt or disrespect.  Who was this guy?  There was such a huge divide between us this time.  It opened up the day they got here and the rip is still huge right now after they're back at their mom's.  Makes me wonder if we'll make it through the blended family minefield with a marriage at the end of it.

She's a good mom?

>> Monday, May 9, 2011

On my MIL's Facebook yesterday, my MIL told the ex she was doing a good job (in response to the ex kissing up and telling my MIL Happy Mother's Day).  When?  When she alienated the kids from their dad?  When she manipulated them right into therapy many times and Prozac?  When she changed therapists every time a therapist would say the ex's behavior was the reason the kids were in therapy?  When she didn't take my stepson to his speech and occupational therapy and the wicked stepmom did?  When she didn't give the kids boundaries or rules or consequences?  When she allowed my super bright stepson to almost fail all three years of junior high because she couldn't be bothered making sure he did his homework?  When she lied to my stepdaughter's pediatrician about the source of her stomachaches and put her through stool checks, enemas and x-rays and other medical tests rather than tell the doctor they happened when mom cried when they left to go to dad's house two blocks up the damn road?  When my stepdaughter became so fearful of hurting her mother's feelings in some way she stopped going to dad's house and became over-apologetic and started having panic attacks when she thought she'd disappointed her mother?  When my stepdaughter said that she'd rather die than worry about her mom anymore?  When the ex allowed her kid to be vulgar and pornographically obscene in front of younger kids?  When she excused my stepson's violent behavior every time he physically harmed one of his younger siblings (MY kids)?  When the ex cried in front of them every time they left with their dad until they just refused to leave her home crying alone anymore because she has no life and is pathetic?  When she allowed her kids to be inactive and unhealthy?  When she taught the kids that dad just doesn't matter?  When she taught her kids that their younger siblings matter even less?

When was she doing a good job?

Oh, she gave birth to them.  That excuses everything else!

So, if that is the definition of good parenting, what's the definition for bad parenting?

Boys Gawking Over Cheerleaders

>> Saturday, December 11, 2010

My 8th grade daughter, and the other cheerleaders on the squad, had an away game last week.  They were practicing in one of the gyms before the game when the high school wrestling team stopped by to gawk, drool and make comments.  The guys couldn't help but leave their wrestling equipment to gawk over junior high girls? That's kind of pathetic.  They weren't such big guys though when the cheerleading coach showed up and they all took off.

Another not so subtle reminder that my oldest daughter is growing up.  Next year - high school!  Ugh.

Stepson is Obscene

>> Saturday, December 4, 2010

Well, my 15-year-old stepson apparently doesn't have any parental supervision at all.  Besides the language he uses on his facebook page (swearing a lot, calling his sister names like "w*ore"), he recorded a song to the song, "Wheels on the Bus" but made his own version of it and he's posted it all over facebook.  His version talks about what promiscuous kids do on the bus - that's the best way I can word it without offending anybody.  It's obscene and disgusting.  My husband is working this weekend or else I'd have him listening to it this second.  I'm so upset that I'm shaking.

I don't know if his mother is clueless or if she just has no control over him at all (or doesn't think she has to).  Giving past history where she never disciplined him, my best guess is she still lets him do whatever he pleases without consequences.  That'd be true to form for her - we were the disciplinarians (and he hates us for it because his mom used it to make her the favorite and us the bad guys) and she was/is Disney Mom.

She's a pathetic excuse for a mother.

Daughter Wants a Nose Piercing

>> Friday, July 2, 2010

My 8th grade daughter is asking to get her nose pierced to wear a diamond stud in it.  I showed her videos on YouTube of nose piercings (and made myself feel ill since I don't do well with needles, lol).  I thought it would put her off for a few years yet.  It didn't.  She says she still wants one.

I told her I'd talk to her dad about it but I thought she was too young right now for a nose piercing, maybe in a few years.  Because this is MY kid, I'm allowed to make this decision, as opposed to the comment of the anonymous poster on this post who thought it was ok to insult me to the high heavens for not allowing MY 8th grader, the child I gave birth to and am raising, to ride in a car at night from a concert with a teen driver I've never met before.

I Took Everything Away!

>> Tuesday, November 10, 2009

This morning, I turned into mean mom and took every privilege my kids have away from my three oldest. That means no computer, no texting, no video, no television, no sleepovers, etc. They have to earn them back.

I don't believe kids are entitled to any of these things. Usually, I take one or two things away but after weeks of things building, this morning they lost it all. I used to do this with my stepson after he'd beat up one of his siblings. (My kids haven't beat anybody up but they've done other things enough to tick me off that have to do with messy rooms, attitude, homework, etc. I don't know what has gotten into them but I'm putting a stop to it right now.) Of course, the ex thought we were too strict and was treating him differently than the other kids (we were supposed to ground the other kids too because he hit them I guess). I was the wicked head of our stepfamily in her eyes I think. She was wrong; I'm an equal-opportunity grounder! She ensured my stepson thought we were singling him out as well. I wonder if it'd matter now if he knew his brother and two of his sisters were receiving the same treatment for misbehaving as well?

I've read many books on step-parenting, parenting and other family relationship books. I read a lot of different ways to parent, however, I am a big believer in privileges being earned. I expect respect for others. I think kids today expect everything handed to them but I'm not raising brats!

Whether you are parenting your own or helping to parent your significant other's children, sometimes you have to do things you don't enjoy doing. If my kids think I enjoy grounding them, they're wrong. I didn't enjoy grounding my stepson either (no matter what he and his mother thought) but kids need consequences for inappropriate behavior.

Video Game Household Rules

>> Wednesday, July 15, 2009

My son is a huge video game fanatic. He loves everything "video" but I think kids spend too much time in front of a television or video game system and not enough time in their own imagination (like they could with these toys from Mighty World Toys).

We have video game rules in place in our home (that my stepson didn't agree with and the ex thought we were "too strict" for having). We were just so mean to expect our children to follow rules!

For one, there are no video games during the school week, only on the weekend. They can do homework, read, or play outside.

Another rule is that if you break the household rules, you lose your video game system. I have no qualms about taking the systems and all the games that go with it and putting them in a closet somewhere until the punishment is over. I've done it before. Such a mean stepmom and mom I am eh?

Finally, we only allow certain rated video games be played. There is nothing teen or mature rated in our home at this time. I don't believe the cleavage, shooting, and blood is appropriate at my children's ages. Despite this, it didn't stop the ex from allowing my stepson to bring his inappropriate games to our home during visitation way before he was a teen (you can imagine the problems it caused).

Here are some other rules from Parenting.org. They give some guidelines on things to consider for children.

Five Year Old Navaeh Buchanan Likely Found Dead in River

>> Friday, June 5, 2009

With the disappearance of a five year old girl in Michigan in late May, and a body recently found matching her description in a nearby river, Monroe, Michigan residents are saddened and in shock. It seems like people are just waiting for the confirmation that the body found is missing Navaeh (heaven spelled backwards) Buchanan.

I remember when this story hit, the focus was on people "of interest" who were friends of the child's mother who have criminal records for sexual offenses. I don't understand this at all!

First, she was last seen riding a scooter in the apartment of her complex. I don't allow my children outside in our own yard without my watching them. I certainly wouldn't allow them unsupervised time in an apartment complex parking lot! This child was only five years old! She had no business outside without constant adult supervision.

Second, if you are a mother who is dating, you have a responsibility to your child to ensure you are not bringing dangerous people around your child. Men on a sex offender registry qualify as "dangerous people." The mother's boyfriend was a registered sex offender.

After this child's disappearance, the mother's boyfriend (registered sex offender) was driving a van that the police became interested in. The owner of this van, also a friend of this child's mother, was a convicted rapist!

This mother put her child into direct contact with people who had a history of sexual offenses. What was she thinking? She obviously wasn't thinking about her child's best interests. I haven't heard of any charges being filed yet but if this was her body found, I would imagine those will come soon.

I am very sad for this little girl. It's not her fault that the adults in her life didn't take better care of her. Her mother set up circumstances around this little girl that put her in harm's way. I don't have it in me right now to feel bad for the child's mother. I would like to see her charged with something (assuming she wasn't involved in the child's death...she certainly contributed to it with her negligence and reckless endangerment)!!! This makes me so angry.

If you are a mother, you do everything in your power to keep your child safe. She allowed predators around her child. She makes me sick. Some women don't deserve to be called "mother".

For Their Own Good

>> Thursday, April 2, 2009

I have unconditional love for my children.

I have expectations for my kids so they have expectations for themselves.

I have rules for my children so they have boundaries.

I have consequences for my children when they go outside the boundaries so they understand that actions have consequences AND consideration and respect (for themselves and others) is important.

I love my children enough to do these things. I am their parent, not their best friend. If I raise them right, one day when they are adults, maybe we will be best friends too.

Dad's Pregnant Girlfriend Shot Dead By His Son?

>> Sunday, February 22, 2009

Police say an 11-year-old boy shot his father's live-in, eight month pregnant girlfriend once at point-blank range, killing her and her unborn child. This happened in western Pennsylvania. The boy is being charged with criminal homicide and homicide of an unborn child. The victim, Kenzie Marie Houk, was 26 years old and had a four-year-old daughter who found her mother dead in her bed on Friday.

This is just awful. So sad.

For those of us who have seen violence from a stepchild, this hits too close to home. I used to worry that one of my children were going to be permanently harmed or worse when a stepchild was becoming violent (trying to stomp on a baby's head, pounding the crap out of a sibling, "dead stares" from the stepchild, no remorse or empathy, just to name a few - we have logs of behaviors like this). When it was to the point that I was taking my block of knives off the counter and hiding them whenever my stepchildren were due to arrive and worried about going to sleep at night, it became unbearable. When I had to put baby monitors in the bedrooms of older children, it became unbearable. When my stepchild's pediatrician, who was also my children's pediatrician, warned me when I was pregnant with my last child that she feared that I was going to get hurt, it became unbearable.

Violent behavior from a stepchild is downright scary. The newspaper does not indicate whether there was other violence in the home from this child or have any reports of child abuse. I guess we will all wait for further reports to be made public. In our case, my stepchild's therapist confirmed what we already knew to be the problem (his mother).

I don't know what happened in the case of this boy murdering his father's pregnant girlfriend, but I do know what my own stepchildren went through and the damage that occurred because of it. Children don't belong in the middle of a parent's emotional warfare towards the other parent and other parent's family. It tears them apart and messes them up. If you do this to a child, then you don't know how to parent or love a child appropriately. Any parent who does this is grossly selfish and should seek professional help immediately before you irreparably harm your child.

Baby Oil Hazard to Children

>> Friday, October 24, 2008

Did you know that the bottle of baby oil that usually comes in that basket of goodies you get at your baby shower, or that you pick up at the store with the innocent expectation to soften your child's skin (or your own skin), can be fatal? Like all other hazardous products around your home, baby oil should be kept out of reach of babies and young children. Why? Because of it is inhaled into the lungs, it can be life threatening as it coats the lungs, preventing oxygen from getting where it's needed. Want to read more?

Conversation with a three year old

>> Friday, June 6, 2008

My three year old wanted to play with her Dora bubbles. I let her have them only if she wouldn't open them (and spill them all over my floor) but just blow bubbles. She played with them...then she opened them. Huge soap spill across my newly washed kitchen floor. *sigh*

I take them from her and put them away. She starts to cry. I tell her she can't play with them because she didn't listen and can only play with them outside from now on. She's still crying. She whines with big tears rolling down her face, "Daddy." I ask her, "Do you think daddy would give them to you?" She says, "Yes."

She's probably right. I'm the mean parent.

Instilling the Value of a Dollar

>> Monday, May 26, 2008

If there is one thing we are trying to instill in our children, that wasn't instilled in me as a child, is how to save money. All of our children have savings accounts. We do this so they learn the value of a dollar. When they ask us for something (video game, etc.), it is easy to turn it around on them to pay for it themselves out of their own savings (or pay half and we pay half). Whatever object they were just whining for no longer seems as important when it comes out of their own pocket so they pass up toys that would otherwise lose their interest too quickly.

I don't want my kids living check to check with no savings to cushion them when they need it or wracking up too much credit card debt, which I did in my early adult years. If they know how to save, I am hoping they'll have more financially stable futures than they would have if they didn't.

I'm not sure if this will work or help them manage their money better as adults but I am hopeful it will.

Letting Go

>> Saturday, May 17, 2008

I have all of my kids clothes saved. When I say "all" I really mean all. I have those Rubbermaid totes piled high in our family room packed full of all of their clothes from the time they were babies. Some of them I save to pass them on since we have three girls. However, that doesn't explain why I've kept all my son's clothes since he doesn't have a little brother to pass them onto. It also doesn't explain why I've kept the clothes that don't fit our youngest daughter anymore (since we are supposed to be done having kids).

I have always planned on taking several of their (or my) favorite outfits from the time they were born for about their first five years and making them each a quilt with pieces of them. That's what I tell myself though I don't know how to make a quilt. That doesn't explain why I hang onto the rest of it though...the rest that I don't plan on using for their keepsake quilt.

Today is our city-wide garage sale. I could have put them all out in that. I didn't. I could drop them off at Goodwill, but I don't. Why do I have a hard time letting go?

How Do You Forget Your Kid at an Airport?

>> Thursday, May 15, 2008

A toddler was left behind in an airport. His parents and grandparents forgot him during the rush between connecting flights. They ran for the gate...without the kid. They boarded the plane...without the kid. Granted, the family was scattered throughout the plane and each one thought the other had the child, but come on! They hadn't realized they'd left their child behind until flight crew approached them. According to The Seattle Times and The Associated Press, Air Canada covered the costs for two additional flights for dad to fly back to Vancouver to get his child and return to Winnipeg where mom and grandparents were waiting.

I am sorry but as a mother, I can't imagine running through an airport and not checking to see where my young child was. I can't imagine boarding a plane THAT far ahead of my husband, who I assumed had the child, and not wanting to check on my toddler to see how they were doing on the flight. I can imagine how embarrassed they should feel though.

Dads and Their Girls

This is my husband and our oldest. He took two of our girls to a daddy/daughter dance the other night. He gave them both a flower. The pictures are so sweet. The girls really enjoyed this time with their daddy. They came home giddy and happy. They wanted Saturday to come again so they could do it all over. The girls looked like sweet princesses. It was a nice night for them.

Worried About Our Oldest

>> Friday, May 2, 2008

I'm worried about my oldest because she is so timid. It affects her schooling the most. She spends at least one night a week crying and worried over something going on at school (usually a homework assignment she had a problem with but lately it's been the end of the year field trips too). This week it was two nights - last night and again two nights ago. For homework, she is always afraid she is going to get into trouble usually because she couldn't figure out her homework but sometimes it's because she forgot something at school she needed for homework. I'm worried about how she is going to handle junior high in a few months. How is she going to handle six different teachers/classes and all the rushing in between each class to get from one place to another when she is a nervous wreck now over one teacher?

She also lets her best friend boss her around. That irritates me because some of the things she's being bossy about isn't what is best for my child to do. Right now, it has to do more with boys but in a couple of years, it will be cigarettes, alcohol, and sex. I don't know if she will be able to handle the peer pressure.

She's such an overly sensitive kid. She cries every time her friends do (and lately that's been a lot from one particular friend). She cares about people's feelings and animals and everything she should care about. I just wish she wasn't such a nervous wreck emotionally.
