RIP My GIrl

>> Thursday, June 9, 2011

It's been over a week since we had to put my dog to sleep.  I thought the tears would be done.  I have been keeping busy so I don't have time to dwell on it but there are times when it zings me pretty good.  I guess if I wasn't questioning the decision, it might be easier?  I never want to have to make a decision to put a pet down again.  Today has been one of those days of choking back tears.  I really miss my girl:(

My dog is dead but it's all about my stepdaughter.

>> Thursday, June 2, 2011

Two days ago, we had to put my husky to sleep.  We adopted her for me from a rescue 11+ years ago.  She was my girl - my dog - and the tears just won't stop.

Prior to taking her to the vet, I posted on my facebook how she was in pain and we were taking her to the vet to see if he thought it was time to let her go.  I've actually posted about it several times over the past few months on my facebook so it's not a surprise.  When we got to the vet on Tuesday, it was time to let her go.  She passed peacefully but my husband and I left there both crying and devastated.

When we got home, I didn't want to talk to anybody.  I was practically choking on the sadness.  I posted on my facebook an RIP for her with some pictures for family so they'd know it was done.  When my kids got home from school, I was there for them.  They lived with my dog every day and it affected them. When they went to bed, the quiet in the house gave me too much time to think - the sadness was overwhelming.  My girl wasn't in her spot sleeping and it hurt. Waking up the next morning, when my mind remembered she was gone, was overwhelming.  It's been a crappy two days.   I have not been able to sit still since then.  I have to keep busy or else I think too much and I cry.  I miss my dog like crazy.

While at my 8th grade daughter's graduation this morning, I get a text from my adult stepdaughter:  "Is there a reason no one told us she died?"  (She is on my facebook so she knew...she also knew where we were at the time she was texting because she'd obviously been on my facebook.)

Because it's not something you text?  Because you NEVER answer the phone if we call in YEARS? Because she was MY dog?  Because you have seen her twice in six years and didn't much care about her those two times anyway?  Because we put it on facebook for family to see because it was too hard to talk about?  Because it's not about YOU?

I'm livid.  She was MY dog.  Why does my stepdaughter have to turn this into it being about her?  She doesn't have the right. She could care less that she's gone.  She doesn't care all that much about me either right now (remember...she took away my graduation ticket - the graduation we are driving to her state for tomorrow?!?!). She doesn't contact her younger siblings - not on birthdays, etc. She does not act like she's a part of this family.  Was I supposed to call her crying, to tell her my dog was dead, a dog she's hardly seen in years?

Who does she think she is - taking away her ticket to me for her graduation ceremony this weekend but texting me during my daughter's 8th grade graduation to complain about MY dog's death?

What would've been nice?  "Gee, stepmom's name, I'm sorry to hear your dog is dead."  You know, like everybody else said.

She also was forwarding my response text to somebody (I'm assuming her mother) because she accidentally forwarded my text response that I'd sent to her back to me.  Like I care.

Wet Dog Smell

>> Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Yum, that wet dog smell is drifting through my house right now - and it's not from the dogs...it's from me.  What a nice aroma!

This morning, I gave my daughter's toy poodle a bath before the vet appointment (because yesterday's bath didn't last long after she went outside this morning and rolled in the mud).  I took my shirt off before the bath because I knew she was going to get me wet - me in my bra giving a toy poodle a bath - yippee.  I was right...she got me wet.  Shirt dry so  no big deal.

Take two dogs to the vet a little while ago - the sun is shining.  Walk out of the vet with a 4.8 lb. dog and a 6.8 lb. dog and it's booming - thunder, lightning, and pouring rain.  I have dogs in my arms who are acting like they were totally traumatized at the vet and it's pouring on us.  Yum - the transfer of wet dog smell all over my shirt - the one I made a special effort to keep dry this morning.

*sigh*

One of the worst smells, to me, is wet dog.  I can handle poopy diapers.  I can even handle dog gas better.  Wet dog smell just makes me want to yak.  Tomorrow, I get to take two more dogs to the vet, and three kids, and it's supposed to storm again tomorrow.  Fun days!

Cat Hater - - Liar!

>> Monday, January 31, 2011

My husband proclaims not to like cats (except for a black cat with white feet he used to have years and years ago that he creatively named "Boots").  We have a cat.  I don't claim ownership on this cat.  She hitched a ride on the undercarriage of my SUV back in August and I was unable to locate her owners or find her a new home (boy does my cat allergy appreciate that).  So this lucky kitten (now a cat) who was very lucky not to become roadkill under the tires of my SUV has been here about five months (guess I'll have to claim ownership eventually, eh?).

My cat hater of a husband says to me this morning, "The cat is eating out of the cereal bowl on the counter."

So, I turn to look and my cat-hating husband is PETTING said cat, while she is eating out of the cereal bowl on the counter.  Yeah, that'll show her not to get on my counters oh big cat-hating husband of mine.

He's also calling her "KiKi."  (Her name is Karma.)  My cat-hater of a husband told me he's renamed her "KiKi" because when you go "here kitty, kitty, kitty" it sounds like "KiKi."  Yeah, right.  I guess if you don't pronounce the t's it sort of does but really?

My cat allergy is not ready to claim ownership of her yet.  Maybe when she's been here six months?

Bite Protection for Corn Snake

>> Saturday, December 11, 2010

We have a corn snake that my husband needs to tame again because he hasn't been handling it over the last several months like he used to.  Problem is - he's afraid of getting bit now because the snake struck at him the last time he handled him (no teeth used).  Corn snakes don't have fangs.  They have little teeth that I've heard hurt less than a cat scratch does.  He wants a pair of gloves anyway.  I'm not sure a strange pair of gloves coming at a semi-wild snake is a good idea and I have no idea what kind of gloves would work - a basic leather pair?  A pair of Mechanix gloves that mechanics wear to protect their hands?

Seeing how I refuse to handle the snake at all (the agreement with hubby was if I agreed to allow a snake into our home, he would take care of it), I can't really tease him all that much about it.  We have had this snake for about three years now and up until the past few months, he was very docile and easily handled.  Guess this was a good education for the husband - they have to be handled regularly or else.

Rip a Loved Kitten Away From My Kids?

>> Sunday, September 19, 2010

A few weeks ago, a kitten hitched a ride underneath my car.  I couldn't find its owners after walking the streets, calling the police, vets, dog pound, and humane society.  Nobody has called looking for her.  She's been living with us inside our house...and I'm allergic.  I knew I was allergic before we brought her into the house but I thought somebody would be missing this friendly, clean kitten and I'd find its owners so she wouldn't be with us long.  I'd deal with the allergies until then.  I couldn't just ignore her and hope she didn't get hit by a semi-truck or a wild cat or coyote wouldn't get her, etc.  I don't have it in me.  Well, I couldn't find her owners and my allergies are letting me know they are not liking it at all.  My kids, on the other hand...

Karma (laying with my sleeping daughter)

This is my five-year-old daughter sleeping with Karma, the lucky little kitten.  Karma has made herself at home here - she's best buddies with my tiny dog and ignores the other dogs in true cat fashion, sleeps on my kitchen table when she thinks I'm asleep and won't come back into the kitchen and catch her, climbs my screens, tries to climb the back of my chair while I'm sitting in (resulting in cat claws in the booty and loud cussing), sleeps with the kids, and protests when I try to confirm whether she is, in fact, a female.  What's not to love?  How am I supposed to find this bundle of fur a new home when my kids obviously love this little thing?

Our Little Daschund Mix

>> Wednesday, June 2, 2010

This is what the cute little wiener dog looked like before she became a miniature beached whale.  This picture is about 7-8 months old.  She's not that skinny anymore.  She looks like she could do advertisement for natural diet supplements now. It's not healthy for her to be overweight in general but being part daschund, it's not good for her longer back to carry that extra weight on her underside either.

But boy can this dog bark! She is so annoying.  I've been thinking about getting one of those high-pitched things that will beep at her when she barks.  I'm just not sure if they really work and hate to spend money on something that might not work.

Wiener Dog Barks All The Time

Has anybody had any luck with Cesar Millan's books for dog training?  I need help with a serial barker who drives me up the wall (so I know she must drive our neighbors up the wall as well the way she yipes at them up and down the fenceline when the poor people are trying to sit outside their yards and relax).

From what I've read, it could be insecurity or boredom so either lots of walks for her or the book mentions treadmills. I can't imagine this little wiener dog mutt running her short little stubby legs on a treadmill.  I'd fall over laughing!

She does need to lose weight though.  She's like a little beached whale when she flops over to go to sleep.  When I say "flop", she really does just flop over.

New Puppy from Hubby

>> Friday, January 8, 2010

My new puppy chewed on my huge television armoire that I wanted for years, finally got, and wouldn't allow my husband to get rid of when he wanted a flat-screen television.  I made him slide the television inside the antique-looking cabinet instead of buying plasma mounts for it.  Now it has chew marks on two edges of it.  Oy!

This is my latest present from my husband - a little 1.6 pound ball of fluff and attitude.  I think it's to ward off any new urges he thinks may arise in the future for another baby, lol.  She's a tiny little thing (and will stay a tiny little thing since she's a pomeranian/chihuahua mix).  She's a little love!

House Smells Like Dogs

>> Monday, July 27, 2009

The dogs are taking over my house. Actually, the puppy is. We don't have carpet because of the dogs so you'd think puppy accidents wouldn't smell after they're cleaned up but I can smell dog when I come into the house. I've tried spray air fresheners but they only give a temporary blast of fragrance and then it's gone.

I was looking for something that gave off fragrance consistently throughout the day and I found WoodWick Spill-Proof Reed Diffusers. These look perfect because the kids and dogs can't spill them if they knock them over as they all go barreling though my house (which they do on a regular basis).

No matter how clean my house may look, that smell just makes it feel dirty. I want dogs but I don't want my house to smell like I have dogs.

Newest Internet Sensation - Puppies on Live Cam

>> Saturday, November 15, 2008

When a San Francisco couple put a puppy cam up on their puppies, they had no idea the hit it would make. As I type this, there is one going nuts over one of his toys...really cute.

If you want to see what this is all about, click here and check out the live feed on the puppies. These are Shiba Inu pups if you're wondering.

Break A Child's Heart

>> Sunday, June 1, 2008

I took my four kids grocery shopping this morning with me (that was an adventure in itself). After that fiasco was done, I went to get them lunch. Driving through the restaurant parking lot, we see a stray dog. The dog looks to be a lab mix. Somebody is trying to give the dog some water out of a cup but the dog is afraid of the woman and stays away. So she just sets the cup down and leaves (with the dog trying to jump into their car when she opens the door). Shoot! I don't want to leave a stray dog behind but I have four kids in my car and the back full of groceries. I won't risk my kids getting bit by a stray dog by trying to pack this dog into my car with everybody. I tell the kids that I am sorry but I can't risk a dog bite by a strange dog (visualizing four kids getting rabies shots) and that somebody will probably pick the dog up real soon as it was the lunch hour and the restaurant would be filling up soon. So, we drive home.

I feel really bad but I am trying to reassure the kids. It was the quietest ride home ever with my oldest crying silently. *sigh* We get home and hubby unloads the groceries while I call the restaurant. They said the dog is gone. I'm pretty sure somebody would pick her up but my oldest (the one who cried all the way home) and I get back into the car and head back to the restaurant with a leash just in case. I told my husband before I left that if we drove back down there and the dog had been hit, it was going to be worse for our daughter than just her tears the first time. If we find the dog, I figure I can seatbelt the dog in the back and keep him or her a safe distance away from my daughter in the front now so I'm not worried (that was assuming the dog would come to me anyway). We drove all over the place but the dog really was gone. Thankfully.

We have three dogs already. We didn't need a fourth if we couldn't find its owner. I'm glad somebody picked the dog up. I felt really bad leaving the dog behind the first time but I won't risk a dog bite by a strange dog. That didn't stop me from getting choked up leaving the dog behind though. I felt really bad:(

Almost Lost the Pup

>> Friday, April 11, 2008

We have three dogs, two of which are larger dogs. The third, the youngest, is a little thing as you can see in her picture. She is a Sheltie/Beagle mix with cute, funky eyes.

Our dogs go outside on a heavy-duty 20 foot tie-out cable when they go outside. When the weather is nice, like it is now, they enjoy laying out there. This morning I am sitting here in my living room and look out on the upper deck and see the little pup up on the deck - where the tie-out can't reach...unless it's snapped. It had.

We were SO lucky that she came to the door and wanted in. She could've easily wandered off and been struck by a semi (we have a semi-truck route nearby) or met up with a coyote and been a scooby snack. I am very surprised actually that she stuck around. She's only about six months old - a little spaz of a dog. I'm glad she came back. She's my daughter's pup and it would've broke some hearts if she'd been lost or hurt.

So off I went right away to buy another tie-out at the farm store. As heavy-duty as I can get for the dogs while I figure out how to pay for a fence to fence the yard in so the dogs can run safely around and not worry about them getting loose. I need reinforcements since obviously the heavy-duty tie-outs only work for so long before they crease and snap.
